The reason one piece is great is not just because of a good story telling and really nice pacing.
Many mangas excel at these things and have even better pacing.
One piece is close to heart because it’s a really huge world unlike Naruto (where you know everyone who has some character).
Oda is like the real god of one piece universe, a universe that is very intricately woven and is moving at every point of time. Oda gives an impression that no part of his universe is still at any point of time(unlike Naruto). “Source Naruto Merch”
The world of one piece is still expanding, you are meeting more characters you like and those who you have forgotten. One piece isn’t just a storyline, it is a world altogether- a world that you must visit.
Fullmetal Alchemist is an anime series adapted from the manga of the same name by Hiromu Arakawa. It is about two brothers, Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric, trying to restore their bodies after failing at bringing their mother back to life. It aired in 2003 and was remade as Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood in 2009.
Full Metal Alchemist (the manga, not the original anime– Brotherhood was the better of the two) is probably the most emotional story I’ve ever gone through and stuck with.
Originally I wanted nothing to do with it because of it being a mainstream choice and having a bad rep for the first anime version. When I went back and actually looked into it, I was sucked into it. The fact that it takes two almost anti-hero’s and puts them through struggles similar to what adolescents face as they mature is not only remarkable, but it is also eye opening.
The ultimate antagonist is by far the best I’ve come across. FMA (B) taught me that we cannot hope to be perfect– there’s just no such thing. We must revel in being mortal while we live and appreciate the time given to us. No matter how many times life knocks us down, we MUST push through.
There is always a better day. I don’t know.. But while Naruto is on the top of my own list, Full Metal Alchemist quickly comes in right behind it. Go read it or watch Brotherhood now. If you haven’t yet, you’re missing out.

Dragon Ball (which technically includes the Dragon Ball Z sires going up to vol. 42) is one of the best post-modern pieces in not just manga, but in literature itself (in comparison to the Chines folk tale the monkey king. I know this is an extremely bold statement but the sophistication in writing and illustration are almost untouchable compared to other authors.
In addition I believe that Bleach, Naruto, One Piece and fairy tale are at the top because of the of the age groups that group up around them especially in the US, while Dragon ball hit its peek of popularity in the US in the early 2000’s. Even en now while I am in my twenties I still have the same appreciation that I did being ten and reading the series for the first time!
Berserk, also known as Sword-Wind Chronicle Berserk, is a Japanese anime television series that aired from 1997 to 1998. An adaptation of the manga Berserk, it comprises 25 half-hour episodes produced by Oriental Light and Magic and first aired on Nippon TV.
A deep long and intricately planned storyline of a lone warrior, the ambitious goals of a young general and the friendship, dependance and enmity that surround the two are what give the incredibly well choreographed, wonderfully drawn battles an scenes so much power. Each character has his unique appeal, unmistakable design even of their faces.
The story is gritty, dark and the author fears not to make sacrifices of likable characters when they are necessary, but this just makes Guts’ struggles have more impact and inspire more hope. This is more an epic tragedy combined with dark high fantasy than just a manga.
